In astonishingly general terms, there are 3 general plans used. You need to be able to hop between strategies instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is composed of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to lock in your competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable procedure at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace inbetween your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as as you can while keeping your opponent on the bar. e.g., if your competitor tosses an early 2 and shifts one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you can play 6/1 six/one eight/three 8/3. Your opponent is then in big-time calamity taking into account that they have 2 pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or higher checkers in your competitor’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It must be used when you are extremely behind as it much improves your opportunities. The best places for anchors are near your competitor’s lower points and either on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is important for an effective backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break apart this right away, while your opposer is shifting their checkers home, owing to the fact that you do not have any other extra pieces to move! In this case, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to attempt and get your competitor to get them in this case!
