In exceptionally simple terms, there are three fundamental tactics employed. You need to be agile enough to hop between tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This involves assembling a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as deep as you might achieve, to lock in your opponent’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is judged to be the most suitable procedure at the begining of the game. You can create the wall anywhere within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game continues.

The Blitz

This is composed of closing your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your opposer on the bar. For example, if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your 3-point and you then toss a five-five, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is then in big-time trouble taking into account that they have two checkers on the bar and you have locked half your inside board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be employed when you are extremely behind as this strategy greatly improves your chances. The best locations for anchor spots are towards your opponent’s lower points and also on abutting points or with one point separating them. Timing is critical for an effective backgame: after all, there is no point having two nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your opposer is shifting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other extra checkers to move! In this situation, it is more favorable to have pieces on the bar so that you can maintain your position until your competitor gives you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a good idea to try and get your opposer to get them in this case!
