In exceptionally simple terms, there are 3 fundamental plans employed. You want to be agile enough to hop between game plans quickly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at least as thick as you might manage, to block in your competitor’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anyplace within your 11-point and your 2-point and then move it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of locking your home board as quick as as you can while keeping your competitor on the bar. i.e., if your opposer rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 8/3 eight/three. Your competitor is now in big-time dire straits seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have closed half your home board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have two or more anchors in your opponent’s inner board. (An anchor is a point filled by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are decidedly behind as this plan greatly improves your chances. The strongest areas for anchor spots are close to your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is important for an effective backgame: after all, there is no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then required to dismantle this straight away, while your opponent is moving their pieces home, owing to the fact that you don’t have other spare pieces to shift! In this case, it’s more tolerable to have pieces on the bar so that you might maintain your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be a great idea to attempt and get your opponent to hit them in this situation!
