In exceptionally simple terms, there are three fundamental techniques used. You must be able to switch game plans instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of creating a 6-deep wall of pieces, or at least as thick as you can manage, to lock in the competitor’s checkers that are located on your 1-point. This is considered to be the most acceptable strategy at the begining of the game. You can assemble the wall anywhere within your 11-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the match progresses.

The Blitz

This is comprised of closing your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. i.e., if your opponent tosses an early two and shifts one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a five-five, you are able to play 6/1 6/1 eight/three 8/3. Your competitor is then in serious trouble since they have two checkers on the bar and you have closed half your inside board!

The Backgame

This course of action is where you have two or higher pieces in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor is a point occupied by at a minimum 2 of your checkers.) It should be employed when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your opportunities. The strongest areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjacent points or with one point separating them. Timing is integral for a competent backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no reason having two nice anchors and a solid wall in your own inner board if you are then forced to break apart this right away, while your opponent is getting their pieces home, because you don’t have any other spare checkers to shift! In this situation, it is better to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up until your competitor provides you an opportunity to hit, so it may be a good idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
