In astonishingly simple terms, there are 3 general game plans employed. You need to be able to switch game plans almost instantly as the action of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This comprises of building a 6-thick wall of pieces, or at least as deep as you are able to achieve, to block in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable tactic at the begining of the match. You can build the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shift it into your home board as the game progresses.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your competitor on the bar. For example, if your opponent rolls an early two and shifts one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one six/one 8/3 eight/three. Your challenger is now in big-time dire straits seeing that they have 2 checkers on the bar and you have locked half your home board!

The Backgame

This plan is where you have 2 or more pieces in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position consisting of at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It would be used when you are decidedly behind as it greatly improves your chances. The better areas for anchor spots are near your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with a single point separating them. Timing is integral for an effectual backgame: at the end of the day, there’s no point having 2 nice anchor spots and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then forced to break up this right away, while your competitor is getting their checkers home, considering that you do not have any other spare checkers to shift! In this case, it’s better to have pieces on the bar so that you are able to preserve your position up until your competitor provides you a chance to hit, so it may be a wonderful idea to try and get your challenger to get them in this situation!
