In exceptionally simple terms, there are three basic tactics used. You want to be able to switch tactics instantly as the action of the match unfolds.

The Blockade

This consists of building a 6-deep wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you are able to manage, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are located on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most adequate course of action at the begining of the game. You can build the wall anyplace within your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match advances.

The Blitz

This involves locking your home board as quick as possible while keeping your opposer on the bar. e.g., if your challenger rolls an early 2 and moves one piece from your 1-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you can play 6/1 six/one 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is now in big-time difficulty considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This tactic is where you have 2 or higher anchors in your opponent’s home board. (An anchor is a position occupied by at a minimum 2 of your pieces.) It needs to be employed when you are extremely behind as it much improves your circumstances. The better places for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s lower points and also on adjoining points or with one point in between. Timing is crucial for an effective backgame: at the end of the day, there is no reason having 2 nice anchors and a solid wall in your own home board if you are then required to break up this straight away, while your challenger is shifting their checkers home, seeing that you do not have any other additional checkers to shift! In this case, it’s more favorable to have checkers on the bar so that you can preserve your position up till your opposer provides you an opportunity to hit, so it will be an excellent idea to attempt and get your opponent to get them in this case!
