In very general terms, there are 3 main plans used. You must be able to switch strategies instantly as the course of the game unfolds.

The Blockade

This is comprised of creating a 6-thick wall of checkers, or at a minimum as deep as you can achieve, to lock in your opponent’s pieces that are on your 1-point. This is deemed to be the most acceptable strategy at the start of the game. You can create the wall anywhere between your eleven-point and your 2-point and then shuffle it into your home board as the match continues.

The Blitz

This consists of locking your home board as fast as possible while keeping your opponent on the bar. For example, if your competitor rolls an early two and moves one checker from your one-point to your three-point and you then roll a 5-5, you are able to play six/one 6/1 8/3 8/3. Your opposer is then in serious dire straits considering that they have two pieces on the bar and you have locked half your inner board!

The Backgame

This strategy is where you have 2 or more anchors in your competitor’s inner board. (An anchor spot is a position consisting of at a minimum two of your checkers.) It would be used when you are significantly behind as it greatly improves your circumstances. The better areas for anchor spots are towards your competitor’s smaller points and also on adjacent points or with a single point in between. Timing is critical for a competent backgame: after all, there’s no point having two nice anchor spots and a complete wall in your own home board if you are then required to dismantle this right away, while your opponent is getting their checkers home, taking into account that you do not have any other spare pieces to move! In this situation, it is better to have pieces on the bar so that you might preserve your position until your challenger gives you a chance to hit, so it will be a wonderful idea to try and get your opposer to hit them in this case!
